Q: Is vacuum glass safe for skylights? What happens if the glass breaks?

A: Yes. For skylight applications, vacuum glass can be configured as a vacuum composite laminated structure. The laminated PVB interlayer helps hold glass fragments together in the event of breakage, reducing the risk of fragments falling and causing injury. For large-scale skylight applications, LandVac recommends composite configurations such as vacuum composite laminated glass or vacuum composite laminated insulating glass, depending on project requirements.


Key Safety Features

1. Tempered glass substrate with high wind-load resistance

LandVac vacuum glass uses a tempered glass substrate that retains the strength and impact-resistance characteristics of tempered glass. Its tested wind-pressure resistance can reach 7,200 Pa, with ATI wind-pressure testing providing third-party verification. The actual glass configuration and structural design should be determined according to the wind, snow, and other loads of the specific project.


2. Flexible titanium metal edge sealing

LandVac uses its proprietary flexible titanium metal edge-sealing technology to improve the long-term stability of the vacuum seal. Compared with brittle conventional sealing materials, the flexible metal sealing structure is designed to better accommodate thermal expansion and deformation caused by temperature differences, helping reduce the risk of seal failure and vacuum loss.


3. Long-term durability verified by accelerated ageing tests

LandVac vacuum glass has undergone more than 22,500 hours of accelerated ageing testing. Based on LandVac's established test-to-service-life conversion method, 900 hours of testing corresponds to approximately one year of natural outdoor ageing, supporting a projected service life of 25 years or more.


For skylights and roof glazing, safety should therefore be evaluated not only by the glass itself, but also by the glass configuration, laminated structure, panel size, support system, installation method, and project-specific design loads. Proper engineering design and installation are essential for safe long-term performance.
